The Feared Category C LicenseIf you are interested in acquiring a bus but do not have the license, we have bad news: you will never be able to drive one without obtaining the license.
I took the Category C exam in 2023, and the truth is that I only needed to study for a couple of weeks. After passing the theoretical test, I had lessons for another 3 weeks. In the end, it is as simple as taking 2 classes of 1 hour each week and then showing up on a Saturday morning to take a 20-minute driving test on the track and another practical test on the road.
If you ask me if I learned anything from getting the license, I would say that you learn to understand that you are driving a very heavy vehicle and that you need to act accordingly, anticipating its reactions, especially when going down a slope. As long as you follow those guidelines, the rest is straightforward. Buses, like trucks, are imposing machines.
Driving a bus weighing more than 8 tons gives you a sense of composure, safety, and control that is hard to explain. Of course, the difference compared to a motorhome limited to 3500 kg is simply ridiculous. We love buses, and anyone who comes to meet us will see what we are talking about. They are wonderful machines, and living in them is a true pleasure.
If we consider the Category C driving license in more detail, we can say that it authorizes the driving of vehicles with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 3500 kg, and with a number of seats, including the driver's, not exceeding 9. Additionally, it allows for towing a trailer with a maximum authorized mass not exceeding 750 kg.
Specifically, it authorizes the driving of vehicles other than those permitted by the D1 or D licenses, whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 3500 kg.
